100年前の蝋管音源を聴けるサイト!!
カリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校のドナルド・C・デビッドソン図書館が公開している音のアーカイブは、さしずめオンラインの「オーディオ・タイムマシン」だ。ここには、これまでに録音されたなかで最も古い部類に属する音源がいくつも揃っている。これには感動しました!!19世紀後半から20世紀初頭にかけての音源約6000点をデジタル化し、オンラインで公開しているんです。サイト開設は2005年11月とういことで、それ以来ダウンロードされた件数は延べ70万件に達するとのこと。またこれらの音源は著作権が切れており、ノイズ低減処理を施したMP3ファイルは『クリエイティブ・コモンズ』のライセンスを付与して提供されております。よってユーザーは、これらをストリーミング再生したり、ダウンロードして自由に楽しむことができます。
マウスをほんの数回クリックするだけで、ビリー・マレイが歌う『アレキサンダーズ・ラグタイム・バンド』や、エイダ・ジョーンズが声を震わせつつ歌う『ホイッスル・アンド・アイル・ウェイト・フォー・ユー』などの歓喜に満ちた音が流れ出す。あるいは、『ニグロ・リコレクションズ』のように、米国に強い人種差別があった時代を思い起こさせるものもある。
さすがに19世紀後半の音源はノイズがすごいわけだけど、米国人の文化がこれらの蝋管に刻まれていると思うとそのノイズがまたタイムスリップ感覚を深めてくれます。
